Volatile
One of the short films I have decided to analyse is Volatile because it stood out to me and the story line was clear from beginning to end. The story is non linear because we find out at the end that it was the mum's plan all along to murder her son and set fire to the house.
The clip starts with a boy in a stereotypical teenage room and he is texting his friends making a plan to go to the cinema. He then goes downstairs and we are introduced to his mum, who is seen drinking wine whilst making food. This already gives us the sense that his mum has problems with alcohol as it is day time and she has already started drinking. The son is very abusive to his mum and even slaps her when she says something slightly wrong. This makes her so depressed to the point where she decides to leave the gas on and open the oven assuming that he will light his cigarette and kill him.
The equilibrium of the story would be that there is a happy, nuclear family until the dead dies. The disequilibrium is that the father dying makes the son take out his feelings onto his mum and abuses her domestically and verbally. The climax is when the mother murders her own son by setting the house on fire, and the new equilibrium is that the mum is now supposedly happy.
